She is a member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI), as well as critique groups West PBCG, JARLit and PV Write Club. A graduate of the University of Missouri-Columbia's esteemed School of Journalism, Anitra started her career as a contributor to Wedding & Home magazine (London). She earned awards for feature writing while at the Kansas City Star and covered news as a reporter for Pioneer Press and the Sun Times News Group in Chicagoland. 

In the press office of Chicago Public Schools, Anitra developed press events and wrote speeches for top CPS leadership, including then-CEO and former U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. At a Chicago PR boutique, Anitra led messaging and publicity for a wide spectrum of accounts, including Giordano's Pizza, Adler Planetarium and Ronald McDonald House Charities.

Anitra is a picture book writer, who completes professional writing projects through her communications consultancy Strategy.ink.

She is an administrator of the Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome website wolfhirschhorn.org and a certified attendee of the P.O.D.D. Communication Book workshop. She facilitates Masterpiece Moms, a Chapelstreet Church support group for moms of children with special needs.

Anitra lives in suburban Chicago, Ill., with her husband and their three daughters.
